look around...
STOP 3: This view looks up at Mt. Whitney on a
broad alluvial slope that flanks the mountain front. The streams
and processes examined at this stop are a transition from the high
alpine
environment to the lowland desert evironments. Put another way,
we are leaving the "Range (one of many)" and heading into the "Basin
(one of many)" of the basin and Range Physiographic Province. This movie
takes you on a virtual flight where you can see both the Sierra Nevada,
the lowland desert of the Owens Valley (a graben) and the alluvial fan
topography between the two. In
the topography between the desert and mountains, streams struggls to
transport
sediment derived from the High Sierra while its water discharge
decreases due to evaporation in the dry desert air and soaking into the
alluvial
slope.
