Follow the Water Stop 6 of 13

STOP 6: It's getting hazy and hot as we get away from the high mountains.  In the far distance are the High Sierra Mountains.  The white plain in the middle ground is the dry playa lake bed of what  was once Owens Lake.  Water from Owens River drains into this basin, but the water evaporates before a lake can form.

A lake did exist here as recently as the early 20th century, before Los Angeles Department of Water and Power began its water diversions.
